WTF: Bench Alibata stamps

Musa snapped some photos of “Alibata” stamps by Philippine mega clothing retailer BENCH for their PinoyLab line. I didn’t see them for sale on their site but I assume they are real and are on display in their store. While I applaud their intention, it misguided in my opinion. Besides the misnomer of Alibata and calling it an alphabet, they added additional characters outside the base 17. I don’t have a problem with the + cancellation kudlit. I do have an issue with the expanded set (C, J, Q, Z, X) made popular by Bayani Mendoza. What’s bad about this is that it will confuse people. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for modernizing the script but we have to get the basics 1st. Walk before running. This is flying before crawling. You don’t learn Baybayin just by looking at a chart. You also need context.

I’ll be in San Jose, CA on Sunday June 27, 2010 Bamboo Park (across from the HP Pavillion) for Silicon Valley’s largest outdoor celebration of Pilipino Art and Culture.

I’ll have new art prints from my work in the Boracay as well as other hard to find items for sale (DVDs, books, CDRoms, etc). Also, I’m putting together a mini exhibit of Baybayin items I found in the Philippines while filming my Baybayin documentary.

As always, FREE materials and name translations from myself and Ray from Malaya Designs.

While filming my Baybayin documentary, I spend a lot of time at cafes while waiting for people I’m interviewing. One of the best is the Mary Grace Cafe. What I like about the setup is that it’s like I’m in my mom’s kitchen. You feel at home with Pinoy comfort food. Mary Grace fans can leave notes under the glass table top.

Baybayin film update

Quick update on the filming of my Baybayin documentary in Manila. 1 word….change

So much has changed since I lived here from 1996-2003 and visited last visited in 2005

While all the annoying crap like traffic, poverty, lateness and etc is still here, there’s a growing youth scene fueled by a sense of Filipino pride. However, I don’t yet know what the context is of the pride. I have an idea but I would need more time to come to any conclusions.

So far, I’m about 1/3 though my filming. I had the please to interview Dr.Bonifacio Comandante for about 2 hours about his research. Above is a sketch of where he believes the Baybayin Ka character came from.

Prior to coming here, I forgot that we would be in the middle of elections (May 10). Some of the people I had scheduled asked to postpone until after May 10. There seems to be some election day jitters considering this is the 1st time electronic ballots will be used. A failure of elections could really screw up this project. Either way, I’ll be documenting it as an underlying theme. In fact, all the non-Baybayin stuff is an entire project.

Yes, there is a Baybayin community here in the Philippines and it is alive.
